Benazir is Back
She isn't back in Pakistan but she is back in the news, refusing to quit
the Pakistan People's Party, as demanded by the sitting government, as a condition for resuming political activity. The same forces, Muslims who can't stand to see a woman with any authority, seek to recycle old and disproven charges of corruption, despite the current regime enjoying the benefits of absolute power.
Musharraf has been helpful in the cause of fighting terrorism (though it was his only smart choice) in recent years but he is still a dictator and he really isn't helping the cause of democratic reform in Pakistan.
If ever there was a clear issue for feminists and true progressives to back in the Muslim world, this is it. Up to now they have largely failed women in these countries. We will see how many self-styled Western advocates come through this time.
