Already missed from TV in recent years, Louis Rukeyser
died this week.
Perhaps the largest factor in the growth of the stock and bond markets is the investment of so many American households, nearly half of all US middle-class households by some accounts. Louis Rukeyser deserves as much or more credit than any other individual for this trend because it was he who first brought the subjects of economics and finance to the living room in plain English. He may well be who raised common interest in investment to the point where early online financial services could be profitable, eventually giving rise to CNBC. He may not have been the most famous TV personality of his time but he may well have a place in history as one of the greatest contributors to the strength of his country.
