Seven police officers, a trainee and a firefighter all quit their jobs
because mayor Jack Ellis wouldn't do anything about the prosecution of Dwight York, Nuwaubian cult leader recently sentenced to 135 years on mostly child molestation charges. If the unscientific poll on the 940 WMAC
website is any indication, the people of Macon do not feel deprived without these officers' service.
One more underreported and therefore distorted issue in the media is the WMD materials that have actually been found
in Iraq, which is related also to the thwarted chemical attack
in Jordan using weapons most likely brought in from Syria
. Let us hope that more is being done about this than we're hearing.
135 Years for York
Dwight York, known by many names, has at last been sentenced to 135 years
for child molestation and racketeering charges. York for years has had his compound in nearby Putnam County, leading his cult and drawing parallels with David Koresh. Having interacted with some of his followers over the years, I can confirm the cult nature of the group, down to the bad diet and the loopy theology. Read about it in their own words
and in the words of academics
The extremist government of Syria continues
to allow weapons and personnel across its borders into Iraq to fight the US military, despite numerous warnings. Why is this story so underreported? Does the western press really want things to get worse for everyone?
Air America Bills
I thought I'd give Air America
a fair amount of time to get itself established and work out the awkwardness of being a brand new venture but already they're bouncing checks
and even handling the dispute rather immaturely. I don't think anyone expected the beginning of the end to come this soon.
Air America News
There is no link I can show you with their news text but I just heard in Air America's news program that NASA will be keeping the rovers on Mars for a while longer. They really said that, and said the same thing again further into the story with something like "the cost of keeping the rovers on Mars." What do they mean to tell us? Will the rovers be repossessed if we don't pay more rent?
Over the Top
I already perceived John Kerry to be the worst major presidential candidate since McGovern but now that he has called
Muqtada as-Sadr a "legitimate voice," I no longer wish to disrespect the elderly McGovern with comparisons. Only a fool would vote for this man.
I watch NBC's "Today" show for one and only one reason, Ann Curry, and most certainly not
for Katie Couric.
The Catholic Vote
The Vatican is endorsing a movement by a growing number of priests determined to refuse communion
to candidate John Kerry, a principled stand because of Kerry's most un-Catholic positions on abortion and other issues. This is no small matter because what we might call the Catholic vote includes very large majorities of the Hispanic, Irish and other populations, and may also affect the urban vote in otherwise strongly Democrat-leaning cities such as New York and Chicago, which in itself could take away much of the popular vote enjoyed by Al Gore in 2000. It's also a good sign that the Vatican and its dioceses insist on Communion actually meaning something to those receiving it.
He's Gone Country
In noting the ninth anniversary of the Drudge Report, Matt
includes pictures of himself showing his once-trademark fedora replaced with a decidedly more western style.
Life On Mars?
NASA and ESA teams have both detected methane in the atmosphere of Mars which, in the absence of detectable volcanism, could mean current life. See the article here
